(LibertySociety.com) – Senator Diane Feinstein, D-CA, announced on Tuesday, February 14th, 2023, that she will not be seeking re-election when her term ends in 2024. Feinstein is 89 years old and has been a member of Congress since 1992. During her time in the Senate, she has served on many committees, including the Senate Intelligence Committee, the Judiciary Committee, among others. Feinstein has been involved in politics since the 1950’s, most notably as the mayor of San Francisco from 1978-1988 before becoming a US Senator.
In her statement, Feinstein praised accomplishments in the Senate that were the result of her legislative agenda since re-election in 2018, including bills passed that address healthcare, homelessness, and wildfires. In the conclusion to her statement, Senator Feinstein explained that she still plans to solve problems over the next two years, stating that even though the House and Senate are split, “we can still pass bills that will improve lives.” Feinstein’s fundraising was abysmal during the last quarter of 2022.
Some younger, far-left progressive Democrats have disagreed with many of Feinstein’s actions over the years. Several Democrat lawmakers were unhappy when she was polite and welcoming to Justice Amy Coney Barrett during her confirmation hearing for Supreme Court Justice in October of 2020 after Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death left a spot open. In the final hearing, she praised Senator Lindsey Graham, telling him that it was among the “best set of hearings” she took part in. Heads were spinning for days, with calls for Feinstein to resign or be removed from the Senate Judiciary Committee, and even media outlets drawing attention to her ability to perform her duties as Senator.
Prior to Feinstein’s announcement, Representative Adam Schiff, D-CA, and Representative Katie Porter, D-CA announced that they would be running for the open Senate seat. There are expected to be more candidates announcing their bid for the seat as well.
