(LibertySociety.com) – On May 29, California Governor Gavin Newsom faced some pushback after he Quote Tweeted a news story about a Florida shooting. In his Tweet, he pointed to a bill that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed which would allow for permitless carry. Newsom said that the law, which legalizes carrying a gun without a permit for people over 21 years old, eliminates background checks, instruction, and training/oversight.
However, the law that Newsom is referencing does not take effect until July 1st, 2023, which was pointed out by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ Press Secretary, Jeremy Redfern, in the comments section of Newsom’s tweet. Redfern asked how the law, which hadn’t taken effect yet, could have changed what happened. Fox News also reported that while permits will no longer be required, licensed gun dealers still have to run background checks on potential buyers.
The shooting Newsom referred to was the result of a disagreement that turned violent, injuring nine people, including some children.
This is not the first time Governor Newsom has spoken up about a shooting, as he normally calls for gun control after every instance that gets nationwide media coverage. In January 2023, two shootings in California, a state that has many gun restrictions in place, prompted Newsom to demand the federal government take action, stating, “We can’t do this alone.” Governor Newsom blames Republicans for refusing to create more restrictions on gun purchases, often citing the National Rifle Association (NRA) for having a hold over their decisions.
On Memorial Day 2023, Governor Newsom tweeted a cartoon with no caption, depicting a child reaching for a book on a high shelf but a wall full of guns that were easily accessible, seemingly a reference to what he claims are bans on books in Republican states while also attempting to call them out for not caring about school shootings. Both tweets from Governor Newsom received backlash, especially from users who were aggravated that he said nothing to honor those who lost their lives serving in the military.
