Pelosi Announces Plan To Step Down From House Leadership Position

(LibertySociety.com) – On November 8, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) won her bid to remain in Congress for another term but revealed a bit over a week later she would not continue in a leadership role. The powerful lawmaker was the first woman to hold the position and has led the Democratic party in the House for 20 years. Pelosi said it’s time to let others take the reins and “shoulder [the] awesome responsibility” of leadership.

The House Speaker was born into politics. The legislator’s father, former Baltimore Mayor Thomas D’Alesandro, Jr., was involved in the Democratic party on various levels years before and after her birth. When she was old enough, she followed him into public service. Pelosi became part of the House of Representatives in 1987, and she’s been there ever since.

Pelosi will continue to serve the people of San Francisco as a representative for her district and plans to help the next round of Democratic leaders as one of them settles into the role of House leader. Reps. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), and James Clyburn (D-SC), along with other influential Democrats, are throwing their support behind 52-year-old Representative Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) to lead House Democrats in the next Congress.

What do you think of Pelosi stepping down to make way for new leaders to emerge in Congress?
