(LibertySociety.com) – Since the pandemic’s beginning, many businesses and organizations have set ground rules about masking in their establishments. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) followed suit, setting specific rules for the House floor. Lawmakers who don’t mask up receive fines for their non-compliance. As a result, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has accumulated $48,000 in fines.

The fees will come out of the legislator’s annual salary, but she has no intention of backing down, is unphased by the penalty, and has used her disobedience as a point of protest. In a letter addressed to William Walker, the House sergeant-at-arms, Greene stated she refused to wear a mask because she didn’t want the “American people to stand alone.” She and other members of Congress, including Representatives Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ralph Norman (R-SC), believe the mandate is unconstitutional. Massie and Norman also accumulated fines.
In July, the Kentucky lawmaker reported that the reason for his defiance was similar to Greene’s. Massie said he wants to stand up against mandates and fight for the American people.
With neither side budging on the issue, it seems some Republicans will continue to grow their debt as they battle over freedom of choice for themselves and the US citizens they represent.
