Mitt Romney Blames Trump for Charges By His Enemies

(LibertySociety.com) – Following the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) indictment of former President Donald Trump, many lawmakers have been voicing their opinions on the matter. Senator Mitt Romney, R-Utah, released a statement on June 9th, 2023, in which he said that the 45th President is afforded the same rights as every other American. Romney also said that Trump was to blame for the indictment from Special Counsel Jack Smith. Senator Romney stated, “Mr. Trump brought these charges upon himself,” adding his belief that the documents were still classified and that former President Trump refused to return them.

Romney also made sure to point out other actions by the former president which resulted in two impeachments, both of which received a conviction vote from Romney. In fact, he was the sole Republican in the Senate to vote for the first impeachment. Trump has repeatedly denied the claim that he was not cooperating with the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), and he has defended what he claims is his right to keep any documents that he pleases. Although the two have had a tumultuous relationship for many years, Trump did offer his endorsement to Senator Romney when he was up for re-election in 2018. However, the 45th President has publicly blasted the Utah Senator on multiple occasions, often calling him a Republican In Name Only (RINO).

Other Republican lawmakers have come out in defense of former President Trump, with man claiming that the DOJ has been politicized. Senators Ted Cruz, R-Texas, Josh Hawley, R-Mo., John Barrasso, R-Wyo., and Roger Marshall, R-Kansas, all made similar statements about the weaponization of the federal government, with Cruz and Hawley specifically blasting Attorney General Merrick Garland. Many Democrats have, conversely, expressed their support for the indictment.
