Minimum of 32 People Shot Across Easter Weekend

(LibertySociety.com) – Easter weekend in Chicago was the deadliest of 2024 thus far, with five individuals shot and killed in the city. Twenty-six others were shot but survived. The first deadly shooting of the weekend occurred in a parking lot on March 29 “in the 800-block of 87th Street.” ABC 7 reported that a 29-year-old man was killed by a drive-by shooter in a silver car. A 14-year-old boy is still in critical condition at a children’s hospital after he was shot in the chest by a stranger on March 30 in Englewood on Chicago’s South Side.

Shortly after noon on March 30, a 41-year-old man died at a hospital after being shot multiple times inside a home on South Elizabeth Street. The 18-year-old shooter fled the scene but was arrested on March 31 and charged with first-degree murder. At around 3 p.m. the same day, a 37-year-old man was shot multiple times near the 8200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. He died at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

A 33-year-old man was shot nine times and killed just before 11:20 p.m. on March 30 while pumping gas in the Homan Square neighborhood. A 31-year-old woman in the same vehicle was shot in the shoulder. The man drove himself and the woman to Mount Sinai Hospital, where both are in critical condition. According to ABC 7, detectives from Area Four are investigating the shooting. Five women were shot at around 1 a.m. on Easter Sunday while inside a South Austin neighborhood business. One of the women, who was just 19 years old, died at the scene after being shot in the head. The shooter reportedly fired several shots toward the group and then ran from the scene. No one has been arrested.

Four more people were shot in the same neighborhood at around 2:50 p.m. on Easter Sunday. The two shooters were not known to the four men who were shot. One of the victims was a 16-year-old boy who was shot in the head. He died at Mount Sinai Hospital. An earlier report of the deadly weekend included four deaths, but the now-deceased 16-year-old boy was still in critical condition at the time.
