Matt Gaetz Tells John Durham He Let The Country Down

( – Americans have long-awaited an appearance from Special Counsel John Durham on Capitol Hill following the release of his final report back in May. That day finally came on June 21, when he testified in front of the House Judiciary Committee, allowing lawmakers the opportunity to ask unanswered questions and scrutinize his findings. House Democrats presented a unified narrative during each of their five minutes of questioning, attempting to discredit Durham’s investigation and the results of it, while Republicans were split in their feelings about the report.

Representative Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who called for indictments after Durham’s report was released, was one of a few Republicans who blasted Durham for not prosecuting high-level FBI officials who played a significant role in the Crossfire Hurricane investigation into then-candidate Donald Trump’s 2016 Presidential campaign. He began his line of questioning by discussing Joseph Mifsud, who told Trump campaign foreign policy advisor George Papadopoulos that the Russian government had dirt on then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Rep. Gaetz accused Durham of covering up the actions that jumpstarted the entire investigation by not utilizing the United States intelligence agencies to locate Mifsud, even though he has been missing since 2017. He was photographed in 2018 in Switzerland and was reportedly recorded on a phone call in Italy in 2019, but Rep. Gaetz told Durham that he believes Mifsud was part of the operation to take down then-presidential candidate Trump.

Gaetz then shifted to questions about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, and why Durham did not investigate why Mueller’s team wiped all the data from their phones. Durham responded that he was not asked to look into it. Rep. Gaetz snapped back at him while holding up a copy of a form that showed Durham was authorized to investigate the Mueller probe.

Rep. Gaetz wrapped up his five minutes pointing out that his concern is what was not included in his report. “I think you let the country down,” Gaetz concluded, adding that he believes Durham is “one of the barriers to the true accountability we need.”
