(LibertySociety.com) – A Twitter firestorm ensued after Democratic users learned that CBS’ 60 Minutes would be airing an interview with Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene on Sunday, April 2nd, 2023. Critics were angry that the show would give her a platform to speak from, which kept the topic trending all weekend. According to Fox News, some members of the media were more understanding of CBS anchor Leslie Stahl’s decision to conduct the interview, with some mentioning extremely controversial figures over the years.
MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough and his wife, Mika Brzezinski, defended the decision on their show, Morning Joe, with Scarborough claiming that 60 Minutes has interviewed a multitude of terrible people. He added that “if they interview Charles Manson, they can interview a member of Congress,” noting that he and Mika waited to watch the interview until after it aired. Mika did not understand why there was such an outrage at the decision to interview Rep. Greene, stating that conducting controversial interviews is the purpose of the show.
Some media figures, such as Sunny Hostin from The View, expressed frustration with the lack of pushback from Stahl during the interview, claiming that she normally has facts to share with interviewees. While Hostin was still complimentary to Stahl, other media figures weren’t so positive. Former Congressman turned CNN commentator Adam Kinzinger of Illinois gave his opinion on the matter, stating that it was “insane that 60 min would do this,” according to Fox News.
Representative Greene was proud of the opportunity, sharing clips on social media, as well as a link to the full interview. The clips made their rounds on Twitter, bringing in millions of views. In the interview, she explained why she decided to run for Congress, expressing her disappointment in the establishment Republicans in Congress who attempted and sometimes succeeded at blocking the promises that former President Trump made to Americans. She did not hold back in her criticism of the Democrat party either. She claimed that she wanted to come to Washington D.C. to work for the people she would represent, while helping weed out alleged corruption and push for change in Congress.
