Marine Veteran Wins GOP Primary, Set to Challenge Warren

(LibertySociety.com) – Republican attorney and Marine veteran John Deaton has won the U.S. Senate primary in Massachusetts and will now challenge Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren in November. Deaton, who recently moved from Rhode Island to Massachusetts, beat out two competitors: Ian Cain, a city council member from Quincy, and Bob Antonellis, an engineer from Medford.

Deaton, 56, brings a compelling backstory to his campaign, having grown up in a tough Detroit neighborhood and eventually breaking free of poverty. After working his way through college and law school, he joined the Marine Corps and served as a special assistant to the U.S. attorney, focusing on cartel-related cases. For the last two decades, he has represented injured workers in legal fights against corporations.

Though Massachusetts has leaned heavily Democratic, Deaton aims to unseat Warren by focusing on issues like immigration and criticizing her as a career politician out of touch with local concerns. His campaign has drawn attention for his strong fundraising, aided by a $1 million loan he made to himself, which allowed him to significantly outspend his primary rivals.

Warren, a former Republican who became a progressive Democrat, is expected to be a strong contender in the general election. She previously won her Senate seat by defeating Republican incumbent Scott Brown in 2012 and secured over 60% of the vote in her 2018 re-election. Despite the challenges Deaton faces in this historically blue state, his platform is centered on “retiring” Warren and addressing what he sees as failed policies, particularly on immigration.
