Marco Rubio Has Meeting With Leader of El Salvador

(LibertySociety.com) – Shortly after returning from a trip to El Salvador, Senator Marco Rubio, R-Fla., posted a video on Twitter to highlight his meeting with President Nayib Bukele, criticizing the Biden administration for targeting the country. In addition, he highlighted his thoughts about how the country is addressing the issue of gang violence. In February 2023, Bukele released a video showing the transfer of the first two thousand prisoners to the brand-new Center for the Confinement of Terrorism, a controversial prison that can hold up to 40,000 inmates.

The most prominent gangs present in El Salvador over the last several years were 18th Street and Mara Salvatrucha-13 (MS-13), but President Bukele has reportedly almost completely eliminated them, with members fleeing to other countries or already imprisoned. A recent Gallup poll conducted in El Salvador showed that only 1 in 100 participants now believe that violence is the main problem for the country. President Bukele shared the poll on Twitter, noting that “until a few years ago it was the most dangerous country in the world.”

Senator Rubio slammed the Biden administration for their foreign policy, which he argues caters to corrupt regimes like Venezuela while targeting countries like El Salvador and the Dominican Republic.

President Bukele wrote on Facebook about the time he spent with Senator Rubio, saying that he came to El Salvador to “learn first-hand reality, facing the accusations of the Biden administration.” He expressed his appreciation to him for wanting to learn about it. Senator Rubio also claimed that people can go out at night in the country and feel safe, which is a major difference from the way things used to be in El Salvador.
