(LibertySociety.com) – Authorities in Nashville are investigating a deadly shooting that took place near Tennessee State University (TSU) on Saturday evening. The shooting left one person dead and several others injured. The incident happened just before a homecoming football game between TSU and Eastern Illinois University at Nissan Stadium, around 5:10 p.m.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) gave an update on Sunday, identifying the person killed as 24-year-old Vonquae Johnson. A total of nine people were injured in the shooting, including three minors. According to police, two 14-year-olds and a 12-year-old were hurt, but their injuries are not life-threatening.
During a press briefing on Saturday night, MNPD Public Information Officer Brooke Reese said, “At this point, there are 10 victims that have been confirmed to have been involved in that gunfire, one of which is deceased.” She explained that five of the injured were taken to hospitals by the Nashville Fire Department, while the other five were brought to medical centers in private vehicles.
The mayor of Nashville, Freddie O’Connell, spoke out against the violence at a TSU homecoming event on Sunday. “Earlier today, hundreds of us marched down historic Jefferson Street for homecoming,” O’Connell said. “What was a joyous atmosphere is tonight very different because of a senseless act of violence carried out by people who didn’t care who else might be caught in the crossfire.”
Police believe there could be two suspects still on the run. One of the nine people injured may have been involved in the shooting, but the investigation is ongoing.
Right now, authorities are still trying to piece together exactly what happened. There hasn’t been any additional information released yet, but police continue to work on the case. This incident has shaken the community, turning what was meant to be a celebration into a night of tragedy.
