(LibertySociety.com) – America First Legal (AFL) has filed a lawsuit against Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, seeking records of any communication related to the prosecution of former President Donald Trump between Bragg’s team and various political entities, including the Biden-Harris campaign, the Democratic National Convention (DNC), and other groups. The lawsuit, filed Monday, aims to uncover potential coordination that could have influenced the case against Trump.
AFL is requesting documents and communications between Bragg’s office and the Biden-Harris campaign, the DNC, Color of Change, and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW). The lawsuit also seeks records of any efforts to raise funds connected to Trump’s prosecution in New York v. Trump. Additionally, AFL is interested in communications between Bragg’s office and Judge Juan Merchan’s daughter, Loren Merchan, who runs the Democrat-affiliated consulting firm Authentic Campaigns.
Dan Epstein, Vice President of AFL, emphasized the need for transparency from Bragg’s office, stating, “The public record now reveals a direct contradiction between statements from the U.S. Department of Justice and Bragg’s own office about coordination between the two.” Epstein suggested that groups like Color of Change, which AFL describes as a far-left, Soros-funded organization, may have coordinated efforts between Washington, D.C., and New York City regarding Trump’s prosecution. Color of Change has claimed the prosecution as the “fruit of our labor,” and AFL reports that the group has visited the White House 16 times, meeting with President Biden and Vice President Harris.
The lawsuit is part of AFL’s broader investigation into what it sees as politically motivated prosecutions and the weaponization of the justice system. Recently, AFL also sued Judge Juan Merchan for refusing to release his financial disclosures, amid questions about his daughter’s work at Authentic Campaigns. Under New York law, judges are required to file annual financial disclosures that must be available upon request.
Trump was found guilty in May on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree following a six-week trial linked to Bragg’s investigation. Trump pleaded not guilty, and his legal team is appealing the verdict. In a notable decision, Judge Merchan granted Trump’s request to delay sentencing until after the 2024 presidential election, with sentencing set for November 26.
The ongoing legal battles underscore AFL’s concerns about potential political biases influencing the prosecution and whether impartiality has been compromised in the high-profile case against the former president.
