(LibertySociety.com) – Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign responded with frustration late Thursday night after being mocked at the 79th Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, an event she declined to attend. Traditionally, the charity dinner is known for its light-hearted, self-deprecating humor, but Harris’ absence drew widespread criticism, including from her political rival, Donald Trump.
Trump, during his speech, made a series of jokes about Harris, her campaign, and other Democratic figures, including Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. He humorously suggested that Harris might have skipped the event to go hunting with Walz or would have attended if the funds were designated for bailing out looters and rioters. He also took a playful jab at Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, quipping that Harris should keep him away from the nannies.
The Harris campaign, in its statement, criticized Trump’s performance, misleadingly claiming he struggled to read scripted notes and stumbled through his speech. They also accused him of making the event “all about himself,” despite the tradition of the event being centered on light-hearted humor and self-deprecation.
Harris’ decision to skip the event broke with a 40-year tradition of presidential nominees attending, which sparked further criticism. Trump, in typical style, used the occasion to roast not only Harris but also media outlets and his political opponents.
One of the most memorable moments of Trump’s speech was when he joked about a fictional group called “White Dudes For Harris,” poking fun at the absurdity of it. He concluded with some self-deprecating humor, acknowledging that after years of public criticism, he had little left to say about himself.
Harris initially planned to address the event via video, but her absence left Trump the chance to take the spotlight.
