Kamala Harris Tells Oprah She’d Shoot Intruders, Then Backtracks

(LibertySociety.com) – Vice President Kamala Harris raised eyebrows during a virtual campaign event on Thursday when she made a surprising comment about being a gun owner, telling Oprah Winfrey and the audience that any intruder breaking into her home would be “getting shot.”

The remark came during the “Unite for America Rally,” a livestream event hosted by Oprah Winfrey that featured several celebrities and discussions with citizens about key issues, including gun violence. Winfrey expressed her surprise at Harris’s revelation during a recent presidential debate that she is a gun owner, saying, “I did not know that. And I thought that was powerful.”

Harris responded with a blunt remark that drew laughter from the audience: “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot, sorry.” Winfrey responded, “Yes, yes. I hear that,” as Harris quickly added, “Probably should not have said that, but my staff will deal with that later,” prompting more laughter.

The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

During the presidential debate, Harris addressed her stance on gun ownership, saying, “I’ve made very clear my position on fracking and then this business about taking everyone’s guns away. Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We’re not taking anybody’s guns away. So stop with the continuous lying about this stuff.”

However, Harris’s recent comments have sparked controversy given her past positions on gun control. Social media users were quick to point out her support for stricter gun regulations, including a resurfaced 2007 video of Harris, then San Francisco’s district attorney, stating that police could enter the homes of legal gun owners to inspect how they store their weapons.

“We’re going to require responsible behaviors among everybody in the community, and just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn’t mean that we’re not going to walk into that home and check to see if you’re being responsible and safe in the way you conduct your affairs,” Harris said at the time.

Conservative commentators were quick to criticize Harris’s apparent contradiction. The popular account Libs of TikTok wrote, “Kamala says she would shoot an intruder who enters her home then says ‘I probably shouldn’t have said that.’ Let’s be very clear. She has repeatedly called to take away your guns and she 100% will if she’s elected. Security for me but not for thee.”

Other critics, such as conservative radio host Larry Elder, added, “‘Guns for me, not for thee…’” and Townhall.com columnist Derek Hunter noted, “They’ll get shot by the Secret Service because she has around-the-clock protection. It’s you and your family she wants to screw out of protection.”

The “Unite for America Rally,” organized by “Win with Black Women” in support of Harris, featured over 140 grassroots groups, including “White Women: Answer the Call,” “Latinas for Harris,” and “White Dudes for Harris.” The event took place in Oakland County, Michigan, with an audience of 400 people and included appearances by celebrities such as Bryan Cranston, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Jennifer Lopez, Tracee Ellis Ross, Julia Roberts, and Meryl Streep. Governor Gretchen Whitmer also spoke at the rally, further emphasizing the broad coalition of support Harris is attempting to build ahead of the election.
