Kamala Harris Struggles to Win Over Young Voters

(LibertySociety.com) – Data analyst Harry Enten last Wednesday poured cold water on the media narrative that Vice President Kamala Harris’ candidacy would be much more popular among young voters than President Joe Biden’s.

In a July 24 appearance on CNN, Enten noted that recent polling showed that support for Harris among voters under 35 is currently “significantly less” than the vote totals Joe Biden received during the 2020 presidential election.

According to Enten, exit polling in 2020 showed Biden with a 21-point advantage among younger voters over then-President Trump. However, recent polling between Trump and Harris showed the vice president with only a 9-point lead over the former president.

Enten conceded that Harris is polling much better among voters under 35 than President Biden was in recent months, but added that she remained far behind Biden’s vote totals in 2020.

The media narrative that Vice President Harris has fueled a boost in voter enthusiasm is also overstated, Enten noted.

He said only 39 percent of Democrat voters say they are more enthusiastic about voting in November now that Kamala Harris is the nominee. Another 55 percent say that Harris at the top of the ticket has not made them more enthusiastic.

Among voters under 30, 42 percent said they were more enthusiastic about Harris while another 49 percent said they weren’t.

Enten said the media’s claim that Vice President Harris possessed some “unique potential” to drive turnout among younger voters was not yet showing up in polling.

As of last Thursday, Real Clear Politics national polling average showed Trump still leading the Democrat nominee by 1.7 points.

In a recent Axios/Generation Lab poll of younger voters, Harris outpaces President Biden among voters under the age of 35. Harris enjoys a 20-point advantage over Trump, 60 percent to 40 percent. By comparison, Biden held only a 6-point lead among voters under 35 in the previous youth poll.

Young voters also give Harris a higher favorability than President Biden, with 45 percent saying they have a “somewhat” or “extremely” favorable view of Harris compared to Biden’s 33 percent.
