Kamala Harris Criticized for Tone-Deaf Message on Electric Vehicles

(LibertySociety.com) – On March 7, Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg hosted a Clean Transit Event at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building to announce a public transportation program featuring electric buses. The Veep spoke to a crowd at the event. In her speech, Harris asked the audience to “imagine a future” where all vehicles on the road gave off zero emissions while America is in the throes of a gas price emergency. While it might be nice to think of the United States reducing its dependence on fossil fuels, the message was far off from current issues.

Americans are not only struggling at the pump but affording an expensive electric vehicle for most is absurd.

Although the vice president was talking about public transportation in her speech, the ill-timed message was that everyone must shift to electric vehicles to reach the lofty goal of zero-emission. Given the current situation with crude oil prices and families still reeling financially from the pandemic, the idea seemed tone-deaf and out of touch with everyday reality.

The money to pay for building, maintaining, and supporting the electric bus fleet comes from the American Rescue Plan – a bipartisan measure passed by Congress. While it’s clear the United States agreed to move in that direction and away from gas, Harris’ timing couldn’t be worse.
