(LibertySociety.com) – Vice President Kamala Harris recently claimed on a social media post that former President Donald Trump plans on instituting a federal ban on abortions, leading to backlash from users who criticized Harris, fact-checking the vice president and adding a “community note” to her post.
On Sunday, June 30, Harris posted on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) that Trump “would ban abortion nationwide.” She then promised that she and President Joe Biden would “do everything” in their power to stop Trump and restore “reproductive freedom” for women.
The vice president posted the remark three days after the first presidential debate between Biden and Trump during which the former president said he had no plans to sign a federal abortion ban if returned to the White House for another term. Trump flipped the Democrat’s accusations in the debate and accused them of being the true “radicals” on abortion, and “not the Republicans.”
Trump has remained consistent about his position on abortion throughout his campaign. In April, he published a video explaining his support for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and the current situation of abortion law after the Supreme Court rolled back Roe v. Wade in 2022 which put the decision of how to regulate the practice into the hands of each state. Trump said he supports that position because it allows “the will of the people” to decide on the issue and “do the right thing.”
Under Harris’s social media post, X added a fact-check “community note” explaining that Trump “repeatedly said” he wouldn’t ban abortion nationwide and provided links to multiple articles reporting on the former president’s official position, as well as a link to the 4-minute video from April published on Trump’s own social media platform called Truth Social.
The remark by Harris wasn’t the first time she falsely claimed Trump would try and ban abortion federally. On June 25, two days before the debate, she said he would go through with it “with or without the help of Congress.” And before that, she said in a speech in May that the former president was “gaslighting” his voters into believing that he won’t ban abortion.
