(LibertySociety.com) – The Harris-Walz campaign revealed last weekend that it had raised a staggering $540 million since President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 race and endorsed Vice President Harris as the nominee.
The campaign’s fundraising efforts were prompted largely by Democrat big-money and small-dollar donors relieved that they were not going into the General Election saddled with an elderly candidate with a high disapproval rating.
The Harris-Walz campaign enjoyed a surge in campaign donations during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August.
In a memo released by the Harris-Walz campaign on August 25, campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said the campaign crossed the $500 million threshold just before the vice president’s acceptance speech on August 22. Following Harris’ speech, the campaign had its “best fundraising hour” since it launched one month earlier, O’Malley Dillon said.
The Trump campaign, which began to outpace the Biden campaign in fundraising in the final months before the president dropped out, has been outpaced by the Harris campaign since it launched in late July.
The Trump campaign and its affiliated political action committees announced last month that they raised nearly $139 million during the entire month of July, which was less than half what the Harris campaign amassed in the first week after Biden dropped out.
As of August 1, the Trump campaign reported that it had $327 million cash on hand.
The $540 million announced by the Harris-Walz campaign reflected the total fundraising for both the campaign and the Democratic National Committee, along with their joint fundraising committees.
According to Jen O’Malley Dillon, nearly a third of the donations received during the week of the Democratic National Convention were from first-time donors. Twenty percent of those were young voters and roughly two-thirds were women – two demographics the Harris campaign believes they need to win in November.
The campaign also said there was a surge in campaign volunteers, with almost 200,000 people signing up to volunteer for the campaign during the convention week alone.
