Juilliard Professor Placed on Leave Amid Major Scandal

(LibertySociety.com) – The Juilliard School is well-known in New York as an institution for the best of the best in the world of performing arts. The prestigious educational center has been producing dancers, actors, and musicians since it opened its doors in 1905. Now, Juilliard has a stain on its reputation, as some of the instructors affiliated with the school have been accused of misconduct.

On December 21, The New York Post reported Juilliard School faculty member Robert Beaser was placed on leave pending an investigation into sexual discrimination and harassment charges. His alleged actions and those of a few of his former colleagues were detailed in a December 12 article in VAN Magazine.

The article started by revealing the alleged experience of Suzanne Farrin, who auditioned for a spot at the elite school in 2001. She claimed then-faculty member Christopher Rouse attempted to kiss her after she performed. Farrin stated she escaped his advances and received a rejection letter from the school the very next day.

Reportedly, VAN conducted a thorough investigation into misconduct at the school. According to the piece, Beaser faced multiple claims of discrimination and harassment over several years spanning the 1990s through the 2000s and 2010s. The department was allegedly aware of the situation at least since 2018, yet Beaser remained working until just recently. An open letter was published back on December 16 calling for him to be placed on leave. Many members of the school signed the letter.

A spokesperson from Juilliard stated the school has retained counsel who will be investigating the matter independently.
