(LibertySociety.com) – Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have voiced their support for the people of Cuba over the last few days. Protests have rocked the country as citizens demand their freedom from the country’s Communist regime. President Joe Biden is now being criticized for his response to the demonstrations.
On July 12, Biden released a lukewarm statement in support of the Cuban people. The president said they have suffered from “repression and economic suffering” by the country’s “authoritarian regime.” He went on to say the people deserve to be heard and have their needs met. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), a Cuban-American, slammed Biden for failing to mention that Cuba is ruled by a Communist government that’s imposed socialist ideals for decades.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), whose father fled Cuba, slammed Biden’s State Department for a tweet claiming the Cuban people have the “right to peaceful assembly.”
How is this possible??
The Biden State Dept told us that the Cuban communist dictatorship protects their “right to peaceful assembly”? https://t.co/QpXd4avfMU pic.twitter.com/jdbSB7K8wi

That is a complete lie. The people of Cuba have not had the right to free speech and peaceful assembly for decades. The Cuban government has arrested protesters and shut down the internet. Even CNN’s Jim Acosta, another Cuban-American, is calling on the Biden administration to make the country a priority. The question is, “Will the president take this crisis seriously?”
