(LibertySociety.com) – A tragic case has unfolded in Maryland, where an illegal immigrant, Gerber Luis Sanchez-Centeno, allegedly killed his 18-year-old girlfriend, Dania Cruz-Mejia, just weeks after being released by U.S. border agents. Sanchez-Centeno, 23, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police.
The incident came to light on September 18, when Cruz-Mejia’s family, concerned after not hearing from her, went to her home and found her unconscious. First responders arrived and attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Just two days later, Sanchez-Centeno was arrested and charged with her murder following a brief investigation.
Sanchez-Centeno had entered the U.S. illegally earlier in the year, crossing near Santa Teresa, New Mexico. After being apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol on June 2, he was released under the Alternatives to Detention program, which involved being fitted with a GPS monitor. However, by August 8, authorities lost track of him after he absconded from supervision. He was formally placed on an immigration detainer after his arrest in connection with Cruz-Mejia’s murder.
The case has raised concerns about immigration enforcement and the handling of illegal entrants who are released into communities. James Covington, a spokesman for Baltimore’s Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations, confirmed Sanchez-Centeno’s unlawful status and outlined his history with U.S. authorities, noting that efforts to monitor him had failed weeks before the murder.
Cruz-Mejia, the victim, had only been in the United States for five months. She had been working toward a better future by studying cosmetology and learning English, according to Newsweek. Her teacher, Vivian Salazar, spoke of the devastation of losing such a bright student, recalling how excited Cruz-Mejia was about her education. Her sister, Maria, expressed similar grief, describing the day she found out about her sister’s murder as “the saddest day” of her life.
This heartbreaking incident has highlighted ongoing debates about immigration policy and the challenges of balancing enforcement with community safety.
