Senate Republicans Call on AG Garland To Appoint Special Counsel in Hunter Biden Case
(LibertySociety.com) – On September 16, a group of US senators wrote a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, asking him to give special counsel authorities to US Attorney David Weiss, who is already investigating the Hunter Biden case.
The document details how they currently view the Department of Justice as corrupt, pointing to federal coronavirus measures, lack of protections for Supreme Court justices, and the investigation into former President Donald Trump as proof. The congressmen claim this action would “go a long way in restoring faith” in federal government institutions that had been faltering ever since the FBI raid on Donald Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago.

In May, Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) wrote a letter directly to Weiss. The legislators complained Garland wasn’t being transparent with the investigation, so they turned to the lawyer himself. The senators had concerns about possible conflicts of interest with other members involved in the probe. However, they admitted there was no reason to question Weiss’ ability to work on the Biden case. When President Joe Biden took office, the AG left the Trump appointee in charge to lessen the look of any impropriety.
The September letter, headed up by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX)), said “recent news reports” about how investigators are handling or suppressing, the case is causing concerns. They believe Weiss needs special counsel protections to give him a wider scope to look into possible crimes, “free from political influence.”
