(LibertySociety.com) – An attempted car thief was shot and killed by the car’s owner outside of an apartment complex on March 5 in San Antonio. Officers responded to the scene at around 3:50 a.m., finding the man deceased on the ground.
The homeowner said that he saw lights outside and noticed a person standing near his vehicle when he was getting ready to go to work. The man attempted to drive away in the vehicle, prompting the homeowner to shoot the man. He was struck several times and fled the scene but quickly fell to the ground and died nearby. He was later identified as 37-year-old Juan Castaneda.
Thus far, no charges have been filed against the homeowner. He reportedly told police that someone had attempted to steal his vehicle on two other occasions. One area resident told KENS-TV that “it was bound to happen” as property crime had been on the rise in the neighborhood. He said that several vehicles had been broken into, noting that tires and wheels were often stolen.
One man who also lives in the apartment complex said that it is normally nice and quiet but most of his neighbors had furniture stolen from their patios in recent months. Criminals have had easy access to the complex due to a broken gate. KSAT was on the scene of the incident and noted a large amount of blood on the ground and shell casings. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
On March 11, another man shot and killed a 16-year-old as he was attempting to steal his car outside of his apartment. At around 2:30 a.m., the owner went outside after he heard glass breaking. He found the thief sitting in his car and fired one shot, hitting him in the chest. He was later identified as Adam Tino Arroyo. The San Antonio Police Department said that the investigation is ongoing, but no charges had been filed against the car owner.
