(LibertySociety.com) – The inspector general of the US Department of Homeland Security just launched an investigation into how the Secret Service handled security for former President Donald Trump who was almost killed in an assassination attempt.
The official website of the inspector general said the probe’s objective would be to “evaluate” the process used by Trump’s Secret Service detail to secure his safety during the campaign event in Butler County, Pennsylvania, on July 13, when an assassination attempt nearly succeeded. The message did not specify what day the investigation began, which was one of several notices of ongoing cases pursued by the inspector general’s office.
Immediately after the assassination attempt, Biden made a statement condemning political violence, calling for increased security for the former president, and a thorough review of security protocols.
Going on two weeks after the incident, a lot of questions remain about what happened and how it happened. In particular, several questions surround the alleged shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed at the scene while perched on the roof of a nearby building. Many also speculate about whether or not Crooks was the only shooter involved in the attempted assassination.
The Secret Service and local law enforcement have particularly come under fire regarding all of the security failures that day, and speculation about a potential plot from within to set up the former president. Despite those failures, Trump still thanked them and law enforcement for their response.
Americans are wondering how Crooks was able to access that roof, why it was not properly cleared or covered, and how law enforcement ignored warning signs at least thirty minutes before the assassination attempt, as well as the shouting of Trump supporters who spotted Crooks on the roof minutes before shots were fired.
Kimberly Cheatle, Director of the Secret Service, took responsibility for what happened, yet explained away why the roof of the building from which the shooter fired wasn’t covered. She said it was because of “a safety factor” because the roof was “sloped,” leading to a decision to cover the building from the inside instead.
That explanation is unsatisfactory to the American people, who deserve answers about what happened that day, one of the most harrowing in modern American history.
