Hiker Missing for Weeks in Blistering Cold Found Alive

(LibertySociety.com) – Sam Benastick, a 20-year-old Canadian hiker, has been found alive after surviving more than six weeks in the unforgiving wilderness of the Northern Rockies. Benastick, who embarked on a solo 10-day camping trip on October 7, was reported missing by his family on October 19. His survival through freezing temperatures, which dropped as low as 4°F, has been hailed as nothing short of miraculous.

Benastick was rescued on November 26 by two workers traveling near the Redfern Lake Trail. Using walking sticks and parts of a sleeping bag for warmth, he managed to flag down the travelers, who transported him to a hospital for evaluation.

Initially, Benastick stayed in his car for shelter, but when conditions became untenable, he moved to a creek and mountainside, where he camped for 10 to 15 days. Eventually, he built a makeshift shelter in a dried-out creek bed, demonstrating remarkable ingenuity and resilience.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canadian Rangers, volunteers, and multiple jurisdictions worked tirelessly to locate him. His family also set up a GoFundMe campaign to support the extensive search efforts.

RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson expressed relief and amazement at the successful rescue. “Finding Sam alive is the absolute best outcome,” she said. “It was feared that this would not be the case.”

Benastick’s family released a statement of profound gratitude, thanking the coordinated rescue teams and the community for their unwavering support.

The story of Benastick’s survival highlights the human capacity for endurance and resourcefulness in the face of nature’s extremes. His return has brought immense relief to his loved ones and inspired all those involved in the search and rescue efforts.
