High Unemployment Rates May Favor Newsom's Recall Election

(LibertySociety.com) – In 18 states across the nation, there’s a remedy to remove a sitting governor from office if enough people sign a petition to remove them. This is the current situation with California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, who may be removed from office due to worsening unemployment and homelessness rates amid a seemingly never-ending pandemic.

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) faces a recall election on September 14, when the citizens of California will decide his fate. Although members of his home state elected him with a whopping 24-point margin over his opponent in 2018, many voters are unhappy with his recent performance as governor.

Critics argue Newsom is responsible for surging homicide rates going as high as 31%, “lying” about managing wildfires, and “skyrocketing” unemployment and homelessness. Due to these actions, he has been called a “hypocrite”, a “liar”, and a “failed governor”.

People in The Golden State blame Newsom for long-lasting, restrictive COVID-19 policies that completely shut down the state, resulting in some businesses closing for good. 7.6% of Californians remain unemployed, the second-highest rate in the nation.

An unemployment compensation scandal costing California billions of dollars and resentment over the leader’s hypocrisy at breaking his own coronavirus restriction rules also sent a group of residents over the edge.

The outrage among Californians gives Republicans an opportunity not seen since 2006 — a chance to run the largest piece of the west coast. If that happens, they could finally put a stop to extreme progressive policies across the state.
