(LibertySociety.com) – Vice President Kamala Harris has been on a mission to fight for abortion since Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022. She and other Democrats capitalized on the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision in the lead-up to the 2022 midterm elections.
Harris has held so-called “reproductive freedom” roundtable events across the country to increase grassroots support for abortion legislation and ballot initiatives. Now, she will embark on a college tour this month to reach young voters in swing states about abortion and other issues that are part of the Democrat’s platform. President Biden’s campaign manager, along with a senior adviser, believe that Harris has proven herself to be a “fearless voice on many of the issues that are most important to the core voters in the Biden-Harris coalition.”
During a September 7 interview on CBS Face the Nation, Harris seemed almost robotic as she repeatedly gave the same answer each time Margaret Brennan asked her the time frame in which she believed that abortion access should be cut off. “We need to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade,” Harris proclaimed, giving the same response to three different questions. Harris claimed that Democrats are not looking to allow any additional access than what Roe v. Wade allowed. She accused the Republicans of mischaracterizing the Democrats’ legislation but refused to offer any specifics to Brennan.
Republicans have taken a different approach, claiming that the Democrats want to legalize abortion up until birth. While the legislation that Democrats passed in the House in 2022 does allow abortion up until birth, the language says that those rare cases would only occur if a medical professional determined that the life of the mother was in jeopardy.
However, Republicans remain adamant in their accusations, as activist medical professionals would be allowed to loosely interpret the meaning of “life and health” of the mother. Under the Democrat-proposed legislation, the mental health of the mother could potentially be a sufficient excuse to perform a late-term abortion if a physician was willing to do the procedure. Some Republicans believe that Congress should pass a nationwide 15-week ban on abortion, while others believe that it should be left up to each state to decide.
