Saraya Awliya al-Dam (Guardians of Blood Brigades) took credit for the deadly attack. The group hit a livestock market, residential neighborhood and the Chinese consulate, according to reports. The Shiite militia group is small, but offshoots of the main organization, loyal to Iran, formed after the US assassinated Gen. Qasem Soleimani in 2020.
This attack comes amid increasing tensions between the U.S. and Iran since Joe Biden took office last month. Both countries are still at a standstill regarding the nuclear deal. A recent statement from the Foreign Ministers of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the U.S. indicated that the U.S. will only return to compliance with the deal if Iran agrees to do the same.
