(LibertySociety.com) – American Rounds vending machines that allow customers to purchase ammunition have been installed at six grocery stores in Alabama and Oklahoma.
The vending machines are refrigerator-sized and filled with ammunition. They verify a buyer’s identification using artificial intelligence technology, including “card scanning and facial recognition software.” A potential buyer would first use the screen to select the type of ammunition they want. The vending machine prompts the buyer to produce a government-issued identification card proving they are over 21 years old. The machine then scans the customer’s face to verify identification. Only after the ID and facial recognition steps are complete will the vending machine request payment and dispense the ammunition.
The system that checks age and eligibility “ensures that all transactions comply with federal and local regulations,” according to American Rounds.
A rep for American Rounds said the company is “changing the landscape of ammunition sales” by making the purchase of ammunition “more available.”
The two vending machines in Alabama are located at Fresh Value stores in Pell City and Tuscaloosa. Four other machines have been installed in Super C Mart locations in Oklahoma.
The COO of Fresh Value, Terry Stanley, noted that the customers stated they were “excited about us having this ammo kiosk.”
American Rounds CEO Grants Magers stated there is no limit to the amount of ammunition a customer can purchase, and the machines would be restocked with ammunition every two to four weeks.
Magers said eight machines are being installed at locations across four states, and according to the American Rounds rep, by next year, the company intends to have installed the vending machines at stores in Colorado, Louisiana, and Texas, targeting areas where hunting is popular.
Magers stated that the company has requests for the machines from more than 200 stores across nine states, adding that the “number is growing daily.”
According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), “commercial sales of ammunition must comply” with federal and state laws. However, “a federal license is not required” for selling ammunition.
