Good Times’ Actor John Amos Passes Away at 84

(LibertySociety.com) – John Amos, beloved actor known for his iconic role as the father on Good Times, has passed away at the age of 84. The news of his death was confirmed by his publicist, Belinda Foster, to The Associated Press, though no further details were provided at the time.

Amos’s career spanned decades, with his breakout role as James Evans Sr. on Good Times, the first sitcom to depict a Black two-parent family. Running from 1974 to 1979, the Norman Lear-produced show became a cultural landmark. Amos frequently spoke about how the series portrayed the struggles and realities of African American life, though he often clashed with the writers over the direction of the storylines, which he felt sometimes missed the mark. “It was tooth and nail over what we felt was right,” he once told Time magazine.

In addition to Good Times, Amos had a rich career in television and film. He first gained recognition as the weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and appeared on The Tim Conway Comedy Hour. His career reached new heights when he was nominated for an Emmy for his role in the groundbreaking 1977 miniseries Roots, where he played the adult version of Kunta Kinte, a role he described as life-changing.

Amos’s son, K.C., shared a touching tribute to his father, stating, “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life.”

Throughout his career, Amos appeared in a variety of popular TV shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The A-Team, and The West Wing, where he played Adm. Percy Fitzwallace. His film credits include memorable roles in Coming to America and Die Hard 2. More recently, he reprised his role in Coming 2 America in 2021 and appeared in Uncut Gems in 2019.

Amos continued working up until his death, with his final role in Suits: LA, a spinoff of the popular series. His legacy as an actor and trailblazer in the entertainment industry will live on through his iconic roles and the impact he had on television. His contribution to the medium and his memorable performances will be remembered for generations.
