(LibertySociety.com) – On Thursday, Colin Gray, the father of a 14-year-old accused in the Apalachee High School shooting, was arrested and charged with multiple serious offenses, including manslaughter.
Law enforcement officials say that Gray, 54, gave his son an AR-15 rifle as a gift in December 2023. This act has led to severe consequences for the father, as he now faces several charges. These include four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) highlighted that Gray’s charges come from him knowingly allowing his son to have a dangerous weapon. The GBI also took this opportunity to remind communities to be vigilant and encourage students to speak up if they notice any suspicious behavior in their schools.
The 14-year-old suspect has already been charged with four counts of felony murder for the Apalachee High School attack. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith held a press conference on Thursday night, where he announced that nine people were injured during the attack. Thankfully, all are expected to make a full recovery.
One crucial detail in this tragic story is that the attack could have been much worse if not for the brave actions of a School Resource Officer. This officer, a deputy, was armed and able to stop the shooter before more harm could be done. The presence of this “good guy with a gun” likely saved many lives.
This incident has sparked serious discussions about gun laws, parental responsibility, and the role of armed security in schools. The fact that a father provided his teenage son with such a powerful weapon is at the center of the investigation, and the legal consequences will likely be severe.
As this case unfolds, it serves as a harsh reminder of the responsibilities parents have when it comes to weapons and the tragic outcomes that can follow when those responsibilities are ignored.
