(LibertySociety.com) – The brother of George Floyd defended Democrat vice presidential nominee Tim Walz over criticism about the governor’s handling of the Minnesota riots that followed Floyd’s in-custody death in 2020.
Since being chosen as Kamala Harris’ running mate, Governor Walz’s handling of the Black Lives Matter riots has faced renewed scrutiny, particularly his delay in calling in the National Guard when the riots in Minneapolis turned violent and caused half a billion dollars in damage and burned over 1,500 properties.
But in an interview with ABC News last week, Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd defended the Democrat governor, describing him as “a good man.”
Philonise Floyd lauded Walz for his decisions during the unrest that followed his brother’s death, saying the governor “did a lot of good things.”
Floyd told ABC News that he supported Vice President Kamala Harris’ decision to choose the Minnesota governor as her running mate, describing Walz as “a genuine person” with a “good heart” who was “built to be in office.”
Floyd also praised Walz for his efforts to ensure that there was “some kind of accountability” for his brother’s death. He specifically noted the governor’s decision to place Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison in charge of prosecuting the police officers involved in the incident.
He gave Governor Walz credit for the prosecution and convictions and said the governor should be thanked for helping people and believing in them.
Republicans have accused Governor Walz of dragging his feet in deploying the National Guard to tamp down the violent unrest that led to at least three deaths.
Walz waited about 18 hours after Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey first requested that he activate the National Guard.
An investigative report released by Republican state Senators in the fall of 2020 determined that Walz’s 18-hour hesitation caused the residents of the Twin Cities to lose their “lives, communities, and livelihoods.”
However, George Floyd’s brother told ABC News that Walz’s actions showed that he understood the pain the black community felt over his brother’s death, adding that Walz “had a heart.”
