(LibertySociety.com) – Senator John Fetterman, D-Pa., expressed hope for the success of President-elect Donald Trump’s administration and cautioned against rooting for the incoming president’s failure, emphasizing the importance of putting the nation first. Speaking on ABC’s This Week, in a pre-recorded segment with co-anchor Jonathan Karl, Fetterman highlighted the need for unity, even amid political differences.
“I’m not rooting against him,” Fetterman stated. “If you’re rooting against the president, you are rooting against the nation. And I’m not ever going to be where I want a president to fail. So, country first. I know that’s become maybe like a cliché, but it happens to be true.”
When asked about the broader movement surrounding Trump, Fetterman rejected the notion that it represented fascism, a term Vice President Kamala Harris used during her campaign. “Fascism, that’s not a word that regular people use, you know?” Fetterman said. “I think people are going to decide who is the candidate that’s going to protect and project, you know, my version of the American way of life, and that’s what happened.”
The senator acknowledged the results of the 2024 election and underscored his commitment to fulfilling his responsibilities by engaging with Trump’s Cabinet nominees. In a recent post on X, Fetterman shared that he had already met with Elise Stefanik, Pete Hegseth, and Tulsi Gabbard, with plans to speak with others soon.
“My votes will come from an open mind and an informed opinion after having a conversation with them. That’s not controversial, it’s my job,” Fetterman said, reinforcing his intent to approach each nominee fairly.
Over a month ago, Fetterman advised fellow Democrats to maintain composure regarding Trump’s return to political prominence, urging them not to “freak out” over every action or statement made by the president-elect. On Sunday, he reiterated that message, reminding viewers that Trump has not yet taken office and that Democrats should remain pragmatic.
Fetterman’s remarks reflect an effort to strike a balanced tone in a deeply polarized political environment. By signaling his willingness to collaborate where possible, he positioned himself as a voice for constructive dialogue as the Trump administration prepares to take the reins in January.
