(LibertySociety.com) – Political violence appears to be on the rise in Europe, with “ultra-left militias” committing violent acts against public officials. The most recent attack occurred in Saint Etienne, France, when “a group of masked people” attacked a group of National Rally (RN) activists who were campaigning for France’s snap election.
RN’s Marine Le Pen blasted the group that showed up and immediately began behaving violently. Dressed in all black, the agitators threw food and water at the RN activists. They engaged in physical and verbal attacks, which led to the hospitalization of Herve Breuil. The Parliamentary candidate, who already has a pacemaker, was still recovering after suffering a stroke as a result of the attack.
Le Pen emphasized the necessity to prevent violent acts sparked by electoral campaigns as she likened the attackers to cowards. She argued that the ultra-left would stop at nothing to create division in the country. The snap elections were recommended by French President Emmanuel Macron after a massive shift in support toward the far-right in the latest European Union polls. Macron shockingly dissolved the French Parliament in hopes of drumming up support during his last three years in office. Voters will determine the direction of the country during two separate polls on June 30 and July 7.
Police are investigating the French attack, which was just one of many in recent months. In May, a mass stabbing in Germany at a political gathering left one police officer dead. Police shot and killed the attacker, who was identified as an Afghan migrant. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot on May 15 in a politically motivated attack. The gunman, a far-left activist, told authorities that he shot Fico because of his opposition to additional aid for Ukraine. He also said that he had intended to kill Fico but was unsuccessful.
