(LibertySociety.com) – House Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-NY) has accepted President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Announcing his pick on Sunday, Trump praised Stefanik as a “strong, tough, and smart America First fighter” who will help the U.S. maintain peace and security at the international level. “I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump stated.
Stefanik gained national attention in 2021 when she replaced Liz Cheney as the House GOP Conference Chair. Her role since then has been instrumental, particularly in helping Republicans retake control of the House during the 2022 midterms. She has also led Republican efforts to address rising antisemitism on college campuses, showcasing her focus on both domestic and global issues.
In her statement accepting the nomination, Stefanik expressed her gratitude and dedication to advancing Trump’s foreign policy agenda. “I am truly honored to earn President Trump’s nomination to serve in his Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations,” she told the New York Post. She emphasized her commitment to gaining Senate support for her confirmation, underscoring her dedication to representing America’s interests on the world stage.
“President Trump’s historic landslide election has given hope to the American people and is a reminder that brighter days are ahead—both at home and abroad,” Stefanik said. She stressed that while America continues to be a global leader, the U.S. must also expect strong partnerships from its allies in pursuit of peace.
Stefanik’s focus as U.N. ambassador will likely include combating the recent rise in global antisemitism and addressing the perceived decline in American influence on the world stage. She criticized the past four years of “catastrophically weak U.S. leadership” for compromising national security and pledged to support Trump’s “America First” policy, which promotes peace through strength.
Trump’s first term saw controversial moves, such as withdrawing the U.S. from the U.N.’s World Health Organization and halting a $450 million contribution over the organization’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. With Stefanik as U.N. ambassador, Trump’s administration appears poised to continue a critical, “America First” approach to international organizations and alliances.
