Dick Durbin Seeks To “Name and Shame” Manufacturers of AR-15s

Dick Durbin Seeks To

Unpatriotic Senator WHINES About 2A Rights, Gun Ads

(LibertySociety.com) – On July 20, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) spoke out during a meeting about assault weapons, saying it’s time to take a different approach in addressing gun violence — naming and shaming the manufacturers of such weapons. The lawmaker questioned why AR-15s are “flying off the shelves” and wondered if ads were to blame.

Specifically naming Daniel Defense, Bushmaster, and Mossberg, Durbin said the gunmakers are trying to appeal to men’s masculinity as a selling point. The Illinois legislator discussed another marketing tactic used by gunmakers — patriotism. He wants the companies to be held accountable for the harm their products cause.

Durbin also pointed a finger at the law for allowing 18-year-olds to own semi-automatic weapons, although the most recently passed Bipartisan Safer Communities Act increased the depth of background checks for such individuals.

Psychology Today stated most mass shooting perpetrators are premeditated acts by “angry, vengeful individuals.” If that’s correct, perhaps the responsibility rests on the person committing the crime. The fact is, the FBI reported that such killings are on the rise, so pinpointing the problem may be prudent.

Do you think manufacturers should share in the blame for these instances?
