(LibertySociety.com) – Alan Dershowitz, a prominent attorney and Harvard Law professor emeritus, announced that he has left the Democratic Party, citing growing dissatisfaction with what he describes as “anti-Jewish” elements within its ranks. In a conversation on Talkline with Zev Brenner, Dershowitz expressed frustration with the Democratic National Convention, particularly its handling of Israel-related issues. He condemned the DNC, calling it the “most anti-Jewish, anti-Israel, anti-Zionist convention” he had ever experienced, citing the inclusion of anti-Israel speakers and the protests against Israel outside the event.
Dershowitz revealed that his departure from the party had been building for some time, but the recent convention was the final push. He was particularly dismayed by Vice President Kamala Harris’ role in the party and her absence during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress. He also pointed to Democratic leaders like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders, whom he considers anti-Israel, and mentioned Rev. Al Sharpton, who has faced past accusations of antisemitism.
One of his main concerns is the party’s response to the ongoing conflict in Israel. He criticized some Democrats for refusing to condemn Hamas following the Oct. 7 attack on Israel and for pushing Israel to show restraint without holding groups like Hamas and Hezbollah accountable.
Dershowitz has since declared himself an Independent and said he may not reveal his presidential vote until after November 1. His decision marks a significant break with a party he had supported for decades, driven by what he sees as a deepening divide over Israel and the influence of certain progressive lawmakers within the party. His frustration with the DNC’s stance was a key reason for his departure.
Dershowitz’s departure follows long-standing concerns regarding the Democratic Party’s handling of Israel-related matters, including what he described as a shift toward anti-Zionism, further outlined in his remarks about the influence of progressive members of Congress.
