Dems Fear Polls Aren’t Showing Trump’s True Strength

(LibertySociety.com) – Some Democratic senators are worried that Donald Trump may have more support than current polls suggest. This concern comes from the fact that Trump outperformed poll predictions in both the 2016 and 2020 elections. According to a report from The Hill, Democrats believe the 2024 election will be close, even though Trump is currently trailing Vice President Kamala Harris by about two points in national polls. That’s a smaller gap than what we saw between Trump and Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton at this same stage in past elections.

One Democratic senator, who preferred to remain anonymous, called the current polling “ominous.” They noted that while Trump’s numbers are worrying, there’s little more that can be done. The senator suggested that some voters may be too embarrassed to admit they support Trump because his behavior contradicts how they’ve taught their children to act.

Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania emphasized that polls have been unreliable since 2016. He added that Trump will likely be a strong contender in key states like Pennsylvania. “Polling has really been seriously damaged since 2016,” Fetterman said. “Trump is going to be tough in Pennsylvania, and that’s absolutely the truth.”

Georgia’s Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock agreed that polls shouldn’t be trusted too much. “The only poll that matters is Nov. 5,” he said, referring to Election Day. Warnock stressed that the election will be very close, especially in battleground states like Georgia, and Democrats need to work hard to secure their votes.

Another anonymous Democratic senator suggested that many people mistakenly look back on Trump’s presidency, particularly his handling of the economy, with fondness. This view, they said, might be boosting Trump’s current support in the polls.

In swing states, Trump and Harris are neck and neck, and neither candidate saw much change after their September 10 debate. Democratic pollster Celinda Lake pointed out that some voters who didn’t vote in 2020 but plan to vote in 2024 tend to lean toward Trump. She warned that these new voters could lead to some surprises on Election Day.
