Democrats Vote Against Deportation of Migrants Who Assault Police

( – In honor of National Police Week, Republicans teed up votes for multiple bills aimed at funding law enforcement. One of those bills would force the deportation of illegal migrants who assault police officers. Fifty-four Democrats broke party lines and voted with the Republicans to pass the measure. Republican Representative Jeff Van Drew introduced the legislation back in February. He said then that any illegal migrant who assaults a police officer has “zero respect for our rule of law or our institutions.”

The bill would force federal authorities to detain the offenders while they were being processed for deportation. Additionally, the bill would establish a new inadmissibility category so that migrants who assault law enforcement officers would not be able to return to the country. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer blasted the Democrats who voted against the bill. He accused them of voting “to protect violent illegal immigrants” instead of implementing a new layer of protection for law enforcement officers dealing with them on the streets and at the border.

Republicans have demanded a solution since a group of illegal migrants brutally assaulted two NYPD officers back in January. The incident was caught on video and quickly spread online, sparking outrage across the country. Another group of illegal migrants assaulted a group of Texas National Guardsmen as they barreled past them while attempting to cross the southern border into the United States.

Democrats voting against a measure to protect police is surprising during an election year, especially since they have spent the last three years claiming it was a top priority for the Party. During the months leading up to the 2020 presidential election, the Democrats pushed to defund police departments and reimagine policing in America. However, protecting illegal migrants has taken precedence over nearly everything since Biden took office.

Over 7.6 million illegal migrants have come into the country since 2021, including known criminals. Democrats have also claimed that they want to protect the southern border, but the Senate-authored bill would still allow tens of thousands of illegal migrant entries each week.
