(LibertySociety.com) – House Democrats are uniting to block the Republican-backed Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act that proposes requiring voters to show proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.
Democratic leadership is urging Democrats in the House to vote against the SAVE Act, which would amend the National Voter Registration Act, claiming the bill would put “an extreme burden” on Americans who want to vote.
The bill, introduced in May by Republican Texas Rep. Chip Roy, requires voters to provide proof of citizenship such as a government-issued photo ID showing the individual was born in the U.S., a valid photo ID, military IDs, and a birth certificate before voting in federal elections. The bill would purge noncitizens from a state’s voter rolls. Utah Sen. Mike Lee introduced a companion bill in the Senate.
In a “whip question,” the office of House Minority Whip, Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark, said there is “zero evidence of the widespread fraud that this bill purports to target,” adding it is “already illegal” for noncitizens to vote in federal elections. The whip question noted that “Democrats are urged to VOTE NO” on the proposed legislation.
In a post on Twitter, House Speaker, Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson said the bill would ensure “only American citizens vote in federal elections,” adding that it would require state election officials to get proof of citizenship before an individual can vote and make it easier for Americans to register to vote in federal elections.
In June, Johnson urged House members to pass the legislation in a 22-page report that claimed there was “irrefutable evidence” of noncitizens illegally voting in federal elections.
In response to Johnson’s post, Elon Musk wrote on Twitter that those who oppose the SAVE Act are “TRAITORS,” and asked, “What is the penalty for traitors again?”
The proposal comes as the crisis at the southern border continues. Since Biden took office in January 2021, Border Patrol agents have encountered over 6 million migrants at the border.
