(LibertySociety.com) – The claim that former President Donald Trump called for former Rep. Liz Cheney’s execution is quickly being debunked as a misrepresentation of his comments. Trump’s remarks, which were originally directed at Cheney’s hawkish foreign policy positions, have been twisted by some media outlets to create a more inflammatory narrative.
The incident began during an interview with Tucker Carlson, where Trump criticized Cheney’s aggressive stance on foreign policy. He pointed out that Cheney, known for her support of military interventions, might lack an appreciation for the true dangers of war since she has no combat experience herself. However, this commentary was spun by some news outlets to suggest Trump was actually calling for Cheney’s death. Headlines like those on the Drudge Report misrepresented the comments entirely, implying Trump made a violent threat against Cheney.
Notably, a few journalists stepped in to clarify the situation. Vox’s Zach Beauchamp stated that Trump’s comments were not a call for execution but rather a jab at Cheney’s “chickenhawk” mentality—someone advocating for war without serving themselves. Eurasia Group’s Ian Bremmer also condemned the distortion as “extraordinary irresponsibility.”
Conservative leaders have been quick to criticize the coverage. Rep. Byron Donalds pointed out that Trump’s remarks were clearly aimed at Cheney’s pro-war views and her lack of military service, labeling the situation a “hoax” orchestrated by political opponents to damage Trump’s image in the final days before the election. Social media voices, including the influential @LibsofTikTok account, have criticized these outlets for cherry-picking and editing Trump’s comments to fit a misleading narrative.
This incident has only added fuel to ongoing debates about media bias and election-season misinformation, with conservative commentators like Jack Posobiec and Colin Rugg calling the move a calculated attempt to sway voters. In essence, it appears that Trump’s comment, though pointed, was far from a call for violence, and the narrative of a threat against Cheney has unraveled under closer scrutiny.
