(LibertySociety.com) – Democrats have accepted that Vice President Kamala Harris will be the Democratic nominee for president.
On July 21, President Joe Biden announced that he would not seek reelection with a statement posted to Twitter. While his first post did not endorse Harris, a follow-up post stated that he endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee.
The first support for Harris came just hours before Biden’s announcement. California Rep. Rho Khanna stated that Harris would win the Aug. 7 vote at the Democratic National Convention if Biden stepped aside. He noted that it was not an open primary and the delegates belonged to Biden-Harris.
Khanna’s idea was supported by many Democrats, as after Biden’s announcement Harris received endorsements from former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who said they would do “whatever we can to support her.”
Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who also ran a presidential campaign in 2020, called Harris a “proven fighter” who can unite the Democratic Party.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who some had speculated could run a presidential campaign if Biden had decided not to seek reelection, announced his support of Harris, calling her “Tough. Fearless. Tenacious.”
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who also ran a presidential campaign in 2020, posted on Twitter that he will “do all that I can” to ensure Harris wins in November.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear stated he was “excited” to endorse Harris.
Even those who were skeptical are now supporting her as the nominee.
Though she initially favored an open process, former House Speaker, California Rep. Nancy Pelosi also announced her support for Harris, saying her support is “official, personal and political.”
South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn, who called for a potential mini-primary, has also shifted his support to Harris, saying he was “proud to follow” Biden’s call to support Harris.
Former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean stated there were also financial reasons for selecting Harris since the campaign money could easily be transferred to Harris.
As of July 22, Harris had enough delegates to be named the Democratic presidential candidate at the convention.
