Defense Claims Hunter Biden is a Victim in Gun Trial

(LibertySociety.com) – Hunter Biden’s defense attorney Abbe Lowell attempted to paint the first son as a victim during opening statements in his federal gun crime trial.

Lowell used the word “knowingly” when arguing that prosecutors needed to prove that Hunter Biden knew he was committing a crime when he purchased the Colt Cobra revolver while addicted to illegal drugs. Lowell appeared to blame Joe Biden’s political career for the “traumas” Hunter Biden faced over the last several decades. Lowell admitted that the younger Biden became addicted to alcohol when he was a teenager and developed a drug addiction as an adult.

One media outlet said several of the jurors admitted during Voir Dire that they had family members with drug addictions. The jury will decide if Hunter Biden is innocent or guilty of three charges, including giving a false statement on his federal firearm application when he purchased the gun, giving a false statement when answering questions on the firearms dealer’s paperwork, and buying a firearm while using or addicted to illegal drugs. Photos obtained from his abandoned laptop show that he was using crack cocaine while in possession of the gun, which he only had for 11 days before Hallie Biden threw it in a dumpster behind a grocery store.

Lowell told the jury that Hunter Biden bought the gun with cash because he did not own a credit card at the time. Prosecutors also used text messages and ATM withdrawals to prove that Hunter Biden was using drugs during that period. In the final pretrial hearing, Judge Maryellen Noreika made clear that the prosecution only needed to prove that Hunter Biden was addicted to drugs at the time of the purchase, not that he was intoxicated with drugs at the time of the purchase. Several witnesses testified during the trial, including Hallie Biden, who was given immunity. Prosecutors stressed that Hunter Biden only owned the gun for a short period because Hallie took it from him and trashed it.
