(LibertySociety.com) – In 2020, then-President Donald Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill the seat of late Associate Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The Senate confirmed the new Justice and solidified the High Court’s Conservative majority. Shortly after Barrett’s confirmation, Liberals started fervently discussing packing the court. Some members of the Democratic Party wanted to expand the bench to include more Justices to swing it to the Left.
President Joe Biden has said that he doesn’t support court-packing but wants to reform the federal bench. However, new reports indicate that his administration has ties to a dark money group — one that does not reveal donors’ names — which actually does want to expand the SCOTUS.
Dark Money Ties
An April 8 report by Fox News dug into Biden’s White House point person on judicial nominees, Paige Herwig, and Press Secretary Jen Psaki, who both worked for Demand Justice in the past. That organization is part of a large dark money network called the Sixteen Thirty Fund. The press sec used to work as a communications consultant for the organization, while Herwig was its deputy chief counsel.
Demand Justice is a group that seeks to reform the federal court system to make it more Liberal. Caitlin Sutherland, Executive Director of Americans for Public Trust, a Conservative group, said Demand Justice wants to expand the high court and add term limits. Currently, the Justices on the court have lifetime appointments.
SCOTUS Justice Issues Warning
The news about the Biden administration’s ties to the group comes just days after Liberal-leaning Justice Stephen Breyer warned that packing the court could cause the public to mistrust the Justices and view them through a political lens. He said lawmakers should “think long and hard” before deciding to go down that path.
Biden has not made any moves to pack the courts yet, but there’s no telling what could happen with Demand Justice involved.
