(LibertySociety.com) – A House Judiciary Committee hearing on crime in New York City took place on April 17th, 2023. At the hearing, newly elected Representative Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., claimed that Republicans were only holding the hearing in NYC to run cover for the 45th President who was recently indicted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Bragg has been accused by conservatives of being soft on crime in the city since taking office, often reducing felony charges to misdemeanors.
Speaking to a witness whose son was murdered on video in the streets of New York City, Goldman tried to shift the conversation to former President Trump but was interrupted by the witness who took offense to his comments. Madeline Brame, the mother of now-deceased Hason Correa, an Army veteran, told Rep. Goldman that he was insulting her intelligence, stating that she was “fully aware of what’s going on here.” She added that “that’s why I walked away from the plantation of the Democratic Party.” Goldman responded by saying that there is a crime problem in NYC and other cities in the country and would like to work with her and other victims to come up with “real solutions, not charades like this.”
Representative Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y. claimed the Democrats could not resist trying to make the hearing about former President Trump, saying they mentioned his name at least 38 times during the hearing. Rep. Adam Schiff accused the Republicans of trying to interfere with the investigation into former President Trump, while Ranking Member of the committee, Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., claimed that Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, held the hearing in NYC at the behest of the former president. However, Republicans have planned to hold hearings in cities around the country to allow residents the ability to make their voices heard about how they have been affected by policies they believe are damaging.
