(LibertySociety.com) – Utah’s moderate Republican Congressman John Curtis won his primary elections against the Trump-backed Trent Staggs for the open senate seat of the retiring Senator Mitt Romney.
Staggs won the support of the state Republican party in Utah’s GOP state convention, but his silent voters helped him achieve a comprehensive victory in the Beehive State.
Curtis’ victory can be attributed to his massive financial advantage as climate change donors helped him rake a significant amount of money against his hardliner opponent. During April 8 and June 5, Curtis bagged almost $970,000 in donations, while Staggs only managed to win $260,000. This massive fundraising advantage helped Curtis knock out his opponent by 15% margin.
Staggs slammed Curtis and called him a “RINIO” with no courage to support conservative issues despite the GOP’s strong standing in his state.
Curtis calls himself a “proud sponsor” of the controversial LGBTQ bill that seeks to “destroy female athletics,” according to multiple watchdogs. He stated that the bill finds a much-needed balance between religious liberties and LGBTQ rights.
The moderate congressman has also attracted criticism due to his previous affiliations with the Democratic party. Staggs accused him of joining the GOP only after finding the opportunity to win the vacant House seat of the former Representative Jason Chaffetz in 2017.
Outgoing Senator Romney also praised Curtis and defended his abilities to protect American interests after winning his elections. Curtis has often been compared with Romney, however his campaign has maintained that he has his own identity which will bring a unique voice to the Senate.
Now Curtis will face his Democratic rival Caroline Gleich, who has accused him of getting the backing of fossil fuel groups for political purposes. Gleich is an environmental activist and blamed Curtis for “green-washing” people through his pro-climate rhetoric while opposing most green and pro-climate policies.
Frank Moss was the last Democratic Senator who won from Utah back in 1970.
