
(LibertySociety.com) – Elizabeth Stuart North, affectionately known as “Betsy,” the devoted wife of retired Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North, has passed away at the age of 80. She died on November 16, 2024, after a courageous battle with Corticobasal Syndrome, a rare and degenerative neurological disease. Betsy’s passing was confirmed in a statement that highlighted her legacy of strength and love for her family.
Born in Somerset, Pennsylvania, Betsy led a life rich in love, faith, and dedication to her family. She was the proud mother of four children, grandmother to 18, and great-grandmother to one. A lifelong Christian, she was deeply committed to her faith and found strength in it throughout her life, including in her later years when faced with her illness. Her family remembers her as a nurturing and supportive presence, always prioritizing her loved ones above all else.
Betsy’s marriage to Oliver North began in 1968, and she stood steadfast by his side throughout his military service, including his deployments and the media scrutiny following the Iran-Contra scandal. Despite the challenges, she was known for her grace, resilience, and unwavering support of her family. She managed multiple military relocations with grace, raising four children while fostering a home grounded in faith and love.
Beyond her role as a mother and wife, Betsy was also an accomplished equestrian and remained involved in her children’s activities. Her dedication to her family extended to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her joy in her later years.
In addition to her family, Betsy leaves behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and strength that touched everyone she met. Her ability to face life’s challenges with grace, particularly her battle with illness, inspired those around her. Despite her diagnosis, she remained hopeful, courageous, and dedicated to her faith until the end.
A funeral service for Betsy will be held on December 21, 2024, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Upperville, Virginia. Following the service, she will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, Freedom Alliance, or the Church of Our Saviour, Oatlands.
Betsy’s passing marks the end of an extraordinary life dedicated to her family, faith, and service to others. Her enduring spirit and love for her family have left a profound impact on those who knew her. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
