(LibertySociety.com) – Leading up to the 2022 midterm elections, Republican lawmakers promised their voters in their “Commitment to America” proclamation that they would hold the Biden administration accountable when it comes to the crisis at the southern border. A Fox news report dated February 7th, 2023, details a letter sent to Congress by a collective of conservative advocacy groups, as well as a host of former Trump administration officials who do not want them to fail their voters.
The letter advises Congress to take up and pass the border security bill that was re-introduced into the 118th Congress by Representative Chip Roy, R-Texas. The basic purpose of the bill is to turn away anyone who cannot be detained or sent back to their home country. Simply put, if the border is overwhelmed, no one gets in. Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas has faced backlash during the entirety of his time spent in the position, even from Democratic members of Congress. Most notably, Democratic Representative Greg Stanton of Arizona criticized DHS’s approach to the influx of illegal migrants at the border during a House panel hearing in April of 2022.
The Heritage Foundation has called for the impeachment of Mayorkas, stating that he “has violated his oath of office,” abused his power, and betrayed the trust of US citizens. In an assessment released by the think tank, they highlighted the unconstitutional decisions and policies that have been implemented by Mayorkas to justify their call for his impeachment. They claim that he has intentionally advocated for more illegal immigrants to make their way to the United States. Mayorkas, along with the majority of Biden administration officials, have been accused of repeatedly denying that there was a crisis at the southern border until they were forced to acknowledge the problem after severe backlash from people who live in border cities and the members of Congress who represent them.
