(LibertySociety.com) – Philadelphia drag queens started out their entire month of celebration with a bang, setting a Guinness World Record for the “largest attendance” ever at drag queen story hour. The controversial event was held at the National Constitution Center on June 1, where around 263 people listened to the drag queens read children’s books. The event was hosted by a local gay news outlet and the nonprofit Visit Philadelphia.
A Guinness World Records representative attended the event to verify the newly set record. The event’s alleged success was detailed in a statement from the gay news outlet. However, users on social media held nothing back when criticizing the event. One user wrote that a minority of the population was trying to push their ideologies onto children, noting the tiny crowd in a city of 1.6 million people. Another record set by drag queens that can only be held by drag queens was in June 2023 when 412 drag queens went to brunch in New York City. Guinness was called up to document that allegedly historic event as well.
Corporations across the nation have switched their social media profile pictures to celebrate for the whole month, but pushback has been stronger than ever before. Over the last several years, Republicans and Republican states have passed legislation to ban controversial materials related to gender ideology in public schools. Other laws have banned the use of hormone therapy for underage children.
In Idaho, a saloon owner made media headlines for declaring the month of June as “Heterosexual Awesomeness Month.” Men frequenting the bar will receive a free beer if they show up dressed in men’s clothing. The bar also sought out a judge who would determine if the men’s clothing qualified for the free reward. The position pays $15 per hour. On Wednesdays, couples will get 15% off, and on Thursdays, women will pay happy-hour prices for the entire day.
