Child Abuse Discovered Within Catholic Clergy

( –  A recent French investigation released on October 5 revealed the Catholic clergy and others linked to the Church had abused more than 330,000 children over 70 years.

Upon hearing the devastating news at the Vatican, Pope Francis voiced his “immense sorrow” for the victims brave enough to speak out about their ordeals that aided in the independent probe.

As the leader of the Catholic Church, the Pope is responsible for defining faith and morality issues as they pertain to the masses who follow Catholicism. Therefore, if clergy members stray from the word of God and abuse their power over church members, ultimately, the buck stops with him.

The appointed leader addressed the world from the Holy See on October 6, taking responsibility for the “moment of shame” and calling for bishops to ensure a tragedy like this never happens again. However, just a few short hours after his speech, the Vatican court cleared two priests accused of alleged sexual abuse of youths right there in the Vatican itself.

The Independent Commission of Sexual Abuse in the Church (CIASE) investigated and found thousands of suspected pedophiles had victimized children between ages 10 and 13. Boys comprised the majority of the victims.

The findings don’t mention whether the alleged criminals still work for the church or not, but the commission made 45 recommendations to prevent further incidents. Although the Pope did acknowledge abuse is still a problem, he did not detail plans to protect the innocent in the future.
